This home was constructed in a locality of untouched coastal landscape, and it was important to build a home which blended with its natural surrounds, incorporating materials that are durable, considering the close proximity to the ocean. The house needs to be aesthetically pleasing without compromising the low maintenance external surfaces.

The purpose was to reduce operational energy consumption through passive solar design elements, appropriate construction methods for the climate, appropriate natural ventilation, and the selection of energy efficient fittings and appliances.

The house includes innovative new sustainable technologies and great attention has been given to the materials used. Materials include low carbon steel which is designed to rust then stabilize, rough sawn cedar, block work laid without mortar, honed concrete floors internally and externally, low-e glass throughout, and cedar wall linings, Ezzari tiles for pool and bathrooms made from 100% recycled glass. All internal wall and ceiling paints are clay based with zero VOC’s and acts as a filter to improve indoor air quality, while resisting the growth of mould which can be an issue in this humid climate. All joinery elements are formaldehyde free and contain no VOCs, floor coverings are zero VOC or low VOC, all glues and solvents used are low VOC.

Energy efficiency initiatives includes a 2.4 kW photovoltaic electric power system, evacuated tube solar hot water, natural lighting and LED lighting throughout, standby power, ceiling fans in all living areas and bedrooms, and a really good passive design.
A 20,000 litre rain tank is used for all external taps, laundry, toilets and for topping up the swimming pool. The toilets are 4 Star WELS rating with all taps having 5 Star WELS rating. A natural mineral pool system was chosen over salt water chlorinator, so that pool water can be used on the garden, as well as having health benefits for the occupants. Native plants have been used throughout the garden. Fruit trees have been incorporated into the landscaping to provide an edible garden free from pesticides. Trees such as Lemon Myrtle have been selected for the central courtyard area in order to act as a natural repellant of mosquitos, plus they can be used to flavor cooking.

Further to this, natural finishes have been used wherever possible, creating a home which is healthy for the occupants with good indoor air quality

The end result is an energy efficient home that is a bright naturally lit home, that is warm in winter, cool in summer, has a low environmental impact, low running costs, and is healthy for the occupants. A worthy Joint Winner for the Excellence in Environmental Management Award for 2013.
